Proper Care and Maintenance Routines for
Christensen Handmade Knives & Accessories

All knives, regardless of their steel grade, are susceptible to rust and corrosion over time. Scratches, minor blemishes, stains, and the development of a patina are natural signs of aging and use, each telling a unique story and timeline that should fill you with pride. To keep your knife in excellent condition, follow these care guidelines:

1. CLEANING:

- Wash your knife with warm water and soap after use.

- Avoid soaking your knife in water or any liquid chemical.

- Wipe the knife dry thoroughly.

2. BLADE PROTECTION:

- Apply a light coat of oil to your blade regularly. When using your knife for food preparation, cooking oils like olive or vegetable oil are recommended but not for long term as cooking oils will go rancid.

- We personally recommend using EDCi FORMULA: simply spray it on, rub it in, and wipe it off. EDCi is also safe for food contact.

- If your knife features natural wood scales, remember to keep them oiled. Although they may arrive with multiple coats, you should periodically "feed" them. A good rule to follow is: "Oil once a day for a week, once a week for a month, every month for a year, and then yearly." You can use oils such as BLO, Danish Oil, or Tung Oil.

3. SHARPNESS:

- Sharpen your knife on a stone when necessary, but for everyday maintenance, hone or strop the blade frequently. A quick touch-up can be done by the campfire at the end of the day.

4. LEATHER SHEATH CARE:

- To care for your leather sheath, use mild soap and a damp cloth for cleaning.

- Like wood scales, leather needs maintenance, depending on its use and the environment. Neatsfoot Oil will keep it nourished, and Golden Mink Oil will help waterproof it.

- Avoid storing a knife in a leather sheath for extended periods, as both the knife and sheath need to breathe to prevent mold and rust. Storing separately will also allow the leather to maintain a tight fit.

5. KYDEX SHEATH CARE:

- To clean a Kydex sheath, use soap and water, followed by air drying, or preferably compressed air.

By following these maintenance tips, you can ensure that your Christensen Handmade Knife and accessories maintain their quality, functionality, and beauty over time.
